Celebrating the simple elegance of the ogham alphabet, The Pale Thorn captures the sharp beauty of the ogham letters in white ink on a stark, aged black background. The lack of depictive illustrations or keywords allows practitioners to employ their choice of ogham system, be it based in arboreal tradition (the “tree alphabet”), the kennings, or any other. The deck includes a total of 40 cards; each of the original 20 ogham letters are rendered in both “rooted” and “unrooted” forms to encourage an additional layer of pattern analysis in spreads.
The Pale Thorn is a bridge-sized deck designed to fit comfortably in the hand. The cards are printed with a fine linen finish for easy shuffling and durability, and each deck comes housed in a sturdy folding box. Each purchase includes a link to an online guide offering an introduction to both arboreal and kennings-based systems, examples of how to read “rooted” vs. “unrooted” cards, and a brief introduction to ogham usage in divination and meditation.
